I think my newborn sleeps too much – should I worry?
It is normal for newborn babies to sleep a lot, often 16 to 18 hours per day (24 h period). In fact, babies sleep a lot because they need sleep to grow and develop their bodies and brains: sleep is essential for their growth and development.
During sleep, many brain processes occur and consolidate information, and growth hormone is released. As they grow and develop, sleep patterns will become more regular, and they will start to spend more time awake during the day and sleeping longer during the night.
However, if you have concerns about your baby’s sleep pattern or your baby show signs of being in distress, it’s always best to consult your pediatrician.
