How can I do sleep training with as little crying as possible?

All parents and caregivers hope to teach their little ones to sleep through the night with as little crying as possible. There are a few things you can do to help that, but the most important thing is that you go at your own pace and with what you feel comfortable with. Here are a few quick tips. First, start with a bedtime routine. Have two to three calming activities that help your little one settle down, then put her down for the night. Second, if you give her a bottle or breastfeed during the routine, make sure it’s the first step of the routine instead of in the middle or at the end of the routine. Last, know that any small step that you make beyond that is progress! Over time, at your own pace, take small steps to get yourself out of the bedroom as she falls asleep. So, you might spend a few nights putting her down awake then patting her until she falls asleep. After another few nights you might stay in the room but not pat her back anymore. Eventually, you will be able to move yourself out of the bedroom as she falls asleep.
