Do babies have nightmares?
Many parents wonder if their little one is having a nightmare when he cries out at night or during sleep. We really don’t think that little ones have bad dreams or nightmares. Instead, babies cry out for many reasons. For instance, he might be hungry or need a diaper change. Sometimes you might also notice that when he cries out his eyes are closed or he is not responding to you. When this happens he is probably having what we call a confusional arousal. This is like sleep talking or sleepwalking – he is doing something that makes it seem like he’s awake but he’s actually still asleep.
If your little one is having a confusional arousal, there is nothing to be concerned about. Be sure to check with your health care provider if you think your little one is crying out during the night because something is causing him to be physically uncomfortable.
